Word games for seniors,

A good word game can be as simple as a clear page, a familiar theme, and a little time to yourself. Start with a large print word search, or try one of these easy-to-set-up games with a friend.

1. Large print word search

Look for a short list of words hidden in a letter grid. It is a comfortable place to begin because the words are already provided: you are spotting them, rather than trying to recall an answer from a clue. Our relaxed puzzles use eight words in a 10-by-10 grid, running across or down.

Select one end of a word and then the other. There is no need to drag precisely across the screen. Use the extra-large letter setting if it helps, or download a PDF with 24-point letters. On a narrow screen, you can scroll the enlarged grid sideways.

2. A word chain with a friend

One person names a word. The next person thinks of a word beginning with its final letter: garden, nest, tea, apple. Choose a theme, such as food or places, if you want a little more structure. Take turns at a comfortable pace, and allow a pass whenever someone wants one.

3. The alphabet game

Choose a category, such as things in a kitchen. Work through the alphabet together: apple, bowl, cup. Write down your answers in large letters if you prefer a visual prompt. Skip tricky letters, return to them later, or simply stop when you have had enough.

4. Make words from a longer word

Write a longer word such as GARDENING at the top of a page. See which smaller words you can build using those letters: garden, ring, rain, gain. Each letter can be used only as many times as it appears in the original word. Work together or keep separate lists; a timer is optional.

Choosing a game that feels comfortable

Look for readable text, clear instructions, and a way to pause or take your time. A paper puzzle might suit someone who enjoys a pen; a browser game might suit someone who likes immediate feedback. Preferences matter more than age. Start with a short puzzle and adjust the challenge from there.

Does the game save my progress?

Yes. Your puzzle edition and found words are saved for this browser without an account. Return to the same theme and difficulty to continue. The daily puzzle changes at midnight UTC. Clearing cookies or changing devices means starting without your old progress.

Are these games a memory treatment?

These are games for enjoyment. Leisure Letters does not assess memory or provide treatment, and we do not claim that playing prevents cognitive decline.
